The Writers’ Centre
Founded in 1967, the Writers’ Centre is a non-profit organization for professional writers. We aim to extend the reach of literature in society, to bring writers and readers together, to diversify the range of culture and to safeguard freedom of speech and opinion. The Centre is divided into four regions – East, North, West and South – with offices in Stockholm, Luleå, Göteborg and Malmö respectively. Currently, 1 300 professional writers are members of the Writers’ Centre. It is supported financially by the Swedish Arts Council.
Bookings for free
The Writers’ Centre runs the Writers’ Agency, Sweden’s largest booking agency for writers. Through the Agency, writers can be booked for school visits, readings, workshops, debates, poetry festivals, seminars etc. At www.forfattarformedlingen.se you can search for more than 900 writers that may be booked through us. The Agency’s services are free of charge.
Events
Apart from the Writers’ Agency we run a large number of projects to encourage reading and writing. Every year we arrange literary events on World Poetry Day and World Book Day. We also run several school projects where writers come to lecture for – and inspire – students, teachers and parents.
Podium – exclusive literature through new technology
The publishing house Podium aims to widen the book market by means of digital technology. Classics, bilingual books, children’s books and literature in minority languages are a few examples of Podium’s publication. Through Podium Distribution, professional writers can publish their books, which are then sold and distributed through Podium’s channels. The Writers’ Centre in the world
Lectures by Swedish writers are booked through the Writers’ Centre even by arrangers in other countries, such as the Children’s Book Festival in Cologne. Podium’s books in several languages also reach beyond Sweden’s borders; one example is Pippi Longstocking in Romany, which has been distributed to orphanages in Romania.
